Last week it was Temple Grandin, Rachel Carson and today it was Anne Carroll Moore. My class is loving learning about women, obstacles they have overcome, and their contributions to the world. Their wide eyed response to learning that women only just got the vote a hundred years ago, or even were allowed to wear pants to school finally in 1970 is worth it alone.
Rich discussions, questions and reflections about the roles of women and men have ensued. Third graders have paired up, and actually compared lives of girls, and boys in the past hundred years to their lives in 2022. Mouths open, and mini gasps were the norm.
Of course Mera had to point out, "There is still room for change! Look at the word, "woman!" It has "man," in it."
I love that we are celebrating women's history. My own daughter was over them moon when she realized she would be learning about women in history and trailblazers. It's ironic that your student pointed out the fact that woman still has "man" in it...deep thoughts and reflections on that. Thanks for making it a point to have real conversations about things that matter.
